With the huge number of 3d applications out there that have free mental ray, this could open up a wealth of opportunities with larger clients to speed up their rendering with the RD 64, while maintaning their investment in learning and using MR.
I agree, support for the PURe would be great, and for the same reason as above; it would open up a wealth of opportunity for sales of PURE cards to those that have an investment in learning MR.

but isn't the main point that the approach of rendering isn't going exactly 180 degrees away from each other... ?
this is the product farest away from the renderpipe... hundreds of annoying parameters... to name a few: photon energy, photon reflection depth, photon refraction depth, splotch diameter (scene size !!!), numbers of splotches, and and and........
and on the other side the simple RP with a few buttons...
it's SO boring to tweak light intensities and all the GI / final gather stuff until the image kinda-looks-ok...
((the time for tweaking should seriously be taken to render the frame... i know, i know, render drives are faster that ordinary computers... about the well-known factors seen on the art vps site... 25 for a pure... *yawn*))
i am really seeing that art won't get the RP faster so they need a partner with a huge member base and an accepted GI solution that works... well we have discussed this SO many times... but can it be ONLY mental ray? why then not vray or in god's name maxwell which is pushing more and more...
is the market THAT critically ?

ps. sorry for being so pessimistic / sarcastic... (wrong word - there's no joke... sadly)

Well I think it is the maths that dictate here and MR is industry leader so it has probably the biggest user base with or after PrMan

Well Guyz...
I use also MR, and it is incredible difficult, but also powerful
BUT i'm happy to watch ArtVPS ande Mental Images together.
Maybe i could switch to Softimage XSI.
I hope i could use MR with my Pure P1800....
Bye
Andrea

Andrea Sorry to shoot down your dream. Mental ray is only accelerated with the RD64. Artvps and Mental image not working to produce something interesting for PURE 1800 and PUREPCIX.

GHIOM... are You really sure?
they really cannot push only the RDs when they work with the exact same processors... this would be REALLY weird or even (sorry, i find no other word) stupid.
this cannot be !
the question is (never asked myself about this): is the renderpipe the same for RDs as for pure cards?

It is a pity....
I think that they prefer to work on RD..
If you use MR, you know that you can dived render load "simply" adding a new client..

i await with intrest to see what happens
of course dealeleves no one is holding a gun to your head to use mr
this could be great if it really would be a full implementation of porting mr to rd - dirtmapped ambient occlusion would be a hell of a lot quicker for a starter

i wanna see MR go 50 times faster on a 16 proc RD compared to a dual xeon 3 GHz...
i REALLY wanna see...
we all remember those benchmarks... strangely, they're gone... hmmmm...
